Deuteronomy 9:1-12

Not Because of Righteousness

9 “Hear, O Israel: you are ^(A)to cross over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations ^(B)greater and mightier than you, cities great and fortified up to heaven, ²a people great and tall, ^(C)the sons of the Anakim, ^(D)whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’ ³Know therefore today that he who ^(E)goes over before you ^(F)as a consuming fire is the Lord your God. He will destroy them and subdue them before you. ^(G)So you shall drive them out and make them perish quickly, as the Lord has promised you.

⁴^(H)“Do not say in your heart, after the Lord your God has thrust them out before you, ‘It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is ^(I)because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out before you. ⁵^(J)Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and that he may confirm ^(K)the word that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

⁶“Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are ^(L)a stubborn people. ⁷Remember and do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. ^(M)From the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. ⁸Even ^(N)at Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you. ⁹^(O)When I went up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord made with you, I remained on the mountain ^(P)forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water. ¹⁰And ^(Q)the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words that the Lord had spoken with you on the mountain out of the midst of the fire ^(R)on the day of the assembly. ¹¹And at the end of forty days and forty nights the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. ¹²Then the Lord said to me, ^(S)‘Arise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you have brought from Egypt have acted corruptly. They have ^(T)turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them; they have made themselves a metal image.’

Amos 9

The Destruction of Israel

9 I saw the Lord standing beside^[a] the altar, and he said:

^(A)“Strike the capitals until ^(B)the thresholds ^(C)shake,
    ^(D)and shatter them on the heads of all the people;^[b]
and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword;
    ^(E)not one of them shall flee away;
    not one of them shall escape.

²^(F)“If they dig into Sheol,
    from there shall my hand take them;
^(G)if they climb up to heaven,
    from there I will bring them down.
³If they hide themselves on ^(H)the top of Carmel,
    from there I will search them out and take them;
^(I)and if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea,
    there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them.
⁴^(J)And if they go into captivity before their enemies,
    there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them;
^(K)and I will fix my eyes upon them
    for evil and not for good.”

⁵The Lord God of hosts,
he who touches the earth and ^(L)it melts,
    and all who dwell in it mourn,
^(M)and all of it rises like the Nile,
    ^(N)and sinks again, like the Nile of Egypt;
⁶^(O)who builds his upper chambers in the heavens
    and founds his vault upon the earth;
^(P)who calls for the waters of the sea
    and pours them out upon the surface of the earth—
^(Q)the Lord is his name.

⁷“Are you not like ^(R)the Cushites to me,
    O people of Israel?” declares the Lord.
^(S)“Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt,
    and ^(T)the Philistines from ^(U)Caphtor and the Syrians from ^(V)Kir?
⁸Behold, ^(W)the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom,
    and I will destroy it from the surface of the ground,
    ^(X)except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”
declares the Lord.

⁹“For behold, I will command,
    ^(Y)and shake the house of Israel among all the nations
as one shakes with a sieve,
    but no pebble shall fall to the earth.
¹⁰All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword,
    who say, ^(Z)‘Disaster shall not overtake or meet us.’

The Restoration of Israel

¹¹“In that day ^(AA)I will raise up
    the booth of David that is fallen
and repair its breaches,
    and raise up its ruins
    and rebuild it as in the days of old,
¹²^(AB)that they may possess the remnant of Edom
    and ^(AC)all the nations who are called by my name,”^[c]
    declares the Lord who does this.

¹³“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,
    ^(AD)“when the plowman shall overtake the reaper
    and the treader of grapes him who sows the seed;
^(AE)the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
    and all the hills shall flow with it.
¹⁴^(AF)I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel,
    and ^(AG)they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them;
^(AH)they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine,
    and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.
¹⁵^(AI)I will plant them on their land,
    ^(AJ)and they shall never again be uprooted
    out of the land ^(AK)that I have given them,”
says the Lord your God.

    and by understanding it is established;
⁴by knowledge the rooms are filled
    with all ^(F)precious and pleasant riches.
⁵^(G)A wise man is full of strength,
    and a man of knowledge enhances his might,
⁶for by ^(H)wise guidance you can wage your war,
    and in ^(I)abundance of counselors there is victory.
⁷Wisdom is ^(J)too high for a fool;
    in ^(K)the gate he does not open his mouth.

⁸Whoever ^(L)plans to do evil
will be called a schemer.
⁹^(M)The devising^[a] of folly is sin,
and ^(N)the scoffer is an abomination to mankind.

I Am the Good Shepherd

10 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. ²But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. ³To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. ⁴When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. ⁵^(A)A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” ⁶This figure of speech Jesus ^(B)used with them, but they ^(C)did not understand what he was saying to them.

⁷So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(D)I am the door of the sheep. ⁸All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. ⁹I am the door. If anyone enters by me, ^(E)he will be saved and will go in and out and ^(F)find pasture.
